Working on United Empire Miniature's 1/6 Scale bust of Plato

I've started work on a 1/6 scale bust of Plato by United Empire Miniatures. I've been using acrylics for this project.  I think the eyes and skin tones turned out pretty well on this one.

I finished Andrea Miniature's The Looter.

This was an enjoyable model to paint. All painted with acrylic paints.

Part 1 of Pegaso Models 200mm Pirate Bust

I spent some time this past week while we were away on our Spring Break holiday painting the flesh tones on Pegaso Models 200mm Pirate Bust.

I used all oil paints on this piece.  I primed the model using Black, Grey and then White for a Zenithal priming effect.

Here are some photos of the process and the palette colors I used.

                                                               

The palette- Naples Yellow Hue, Cad. Yellow Medium, Cad. Orange, Alzarin Crimson, Burnt Umber, Raw Sienna, Burnt Sienna, Ultramarine Blue, Titanium White

The first layer of color. I ended up not liking the hair color and switched to a Pale Blonde color instead.

Shadows and Highlights added as very thin layers over several days to build up the color.

Starting work on the eyes.

The pale blonde hair looks better.

The face and hair are completed. Just needed to add in the pupils.

Athenian Hoplite 1/16 scale

I've just completed Miniart's 1/16 scale Athenian Hoplite. This is a fully plastic kit with all of the parts on one sprue. Assembly was pretty easy but like most of their figurine kits it took a lot of plastic filler to cover holes, misshaped limbs and general seam lines. On top of that there was a lot of flash.  The figure was painted using acrylics, which is not normal for me. I usually use oil paints on a larger scale figure like this.  I think the figure came out pretty well. 

I went with a darker skin tone because I believe the people back then spent more time in the sun and considering the geographical area it made sense.

I was rather disappointed with the decal as it took a lot of work and Microsol to get it to conform to the shield.

You'll notice the scabbard is held on with a piece of string. The kit didn't provide anything to attach the scabbard. I was lucky to find some string in my wife's sewing kit that seemed usable.

54mm Italian Knight by Andrea Miniatures

My next large scale figure project is a 54mm Italian Knight by Andrea Miniatures.  It's a lovely sculpt and all metal.

I primed the figure black and then did a white over spray.

The above photos show the water colors I washed over the figure to create shadows and high lights as the under painting of the model.

The above photos show the shadows I've started to place on the figure. Once these are dried I will start to layer on the colors onto the figures as glazes.
