Finished the 28mm AWI figure

Well I finally finished my 28mm AWI figure I started about a week or so ago with the oil paints.  The figure turned out well, I think.  I also did a video about it so you can see it and a few other things I'm working on now and in the future.

Now a few still shots of what I've been working on.  I'm very happy to be a part of the Analogue Painting Competition this year.  I think it is going to be great fun and a good motivator to keep painting.

This process has certainly taught me a lot on color theory and how to apply it. It is certainly getting me away from buying tons of paint as I'm learning to mix what I need.

My current work in progress with oils.

The top photo is going to be interesting.  We will see how that one turns out.

Painted a 28mm AWI Figure

So to give myself a little break from painting WSS figures I took out one of the Perry Miniature AWI figures I had and decided to paint it.  Again this was just a way of testing different techniques I've read about on the web. Ultimately I'm trying to find something I like and can be done quickly.  While I like painting, I enjoy playing more.  So this figure was done with certain process in mind. Prime Grey, block in the color and then do a wash.  Outside of priming the figure and having painted the flesh which I had done a week ago, I painted the rest of it all in one day.  Here's what I did:

Prior to this first step I painted the flesh using a technique from this blog post: The War of Spanish Succession Prussian  The gentlemen who owns the blog and his technique does wonderful work. You should take a jaunt over to his blog and take a look.  This blog post is also where I copied down the recipe for the wash I used at the end.  So this step I painted in the pants using Dessert Yellow.

Then I moved onto the waist coat and the turn backs and painted them white.

Then I chose Dark Prussian Blue for the coat.
Then I painted the cuffs and lapels of the coat red.

Next came the straps which I mixed light grey, off white and a touch of pale sand together.

Then the canteen and musket stock where painted with mahogany brown, the cartridge box was painted black and the knapsack was painted tan. The musket barrel and trigger guard were painted with Foundry Spearpoint.

Then the boots were painted with Chocolate Brown.
Then I applied Aly's Wash to the figure which I linked to above.

I think over all the figure turn out okay.  I will have to practice a little more with the flesh tones but I do like how the figure looks like he has a 5 o'clock shadow.

A better close up view of the finish figure.

If you have any constructive suggestions or comments please leave them below. I am trying to get better at painting larger scale figures.

Battle of Germantown 1777 Enfilade 2015

This weekend was our Enfilade convention in Olympia Wa.  I decided to run an AWI game using my 10mm figures and I use Piquet's Field of Battle for the rules.  I chose to do a portion of the battle of Germantown. I picked the point were the Continentals had surrounded the Chew House and the rest of the army pushed forward to take on the rest of the British army. The victory conditions were 10 points for the Chew house and then 1 point for every destroyed or routed unit.  I had 7 players 4 for the Continentals and 3 for the British.  The game flowed pretty smoothly. After the first few card turns the players were running the game and I was just answering questions.  The British suffered from bad die rolls from the get go and the Continentals took the Chew House within the first few moves.  The Continentals continued to push forward and Cornwallis rushed up to stem the on coming tide. It didn't work.  The British were out of morale chips and the Army Morale card appeared and the army left the field.

Over all everyone had fun and I was relieved that it went as smoothly as it did.

My 10mm Continental Army

They are finally finished and ready to take the field against the Redcoats.  My 10mm Continental Army, painted by DJD Miniatures, look superb.  I finished putting the last bits of flocking on and the flags today.  Hopefully next month I can get them on the table for the first time.

I do have to say this about some of the Old Glory standard bearers.  The flag poles are extremely brittle. Two were broken during shipment and one broke while I was basing it. The Pendraken figures have far more strength to them.  For the ones that are missing their flag, I was thinking of cutting a piece of small metal wire and attaching it to the figure and the base and using that.  Just have to go to the hobby store and pick some up.

Over all I'm pleased with the results.
